AMD Unveils Helios AI System to Challenge Nvidia's Dominance in Data Center Market
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has intensified its competition with Nvidia by officially launching its new Helios rackscale AI system, a high-performance platform designed to power next-generation artificial intelligence workloads and compete directly with Nvidia's flagship AI server offerings. The announcement was made on Thursday during AMD's Advancing AI event in San Francisco, California, where Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su confirmed that the Helios platform has entered full-scale production. The Helios rackscale system combines 72 AMD Instinct MI455X graphics processing units (GPUs) with the company's EPYC central processing units (CPUs), matching the 72-GPU configuration found in Nvidia's Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin-powered NVL72 rackscale systems. Despite the high-profile unveiling, AMD shares fell more than 2% during Su's keynote presentation. Taking direct aim at its biggest rival, Su described AMD's latest AI accelerator as a breakthrough product capable of outperforming competing hardware. "The MI455X is the most powerful GPU in the industry," she said, making a bold challenge to Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI chip market. Highlighting the system's performance, Su said the new Helios platform delivers significant advantages over Nvidia's latest rackscale solution. According to her, the Helios rack provides 15% better compute performance than Vera Rubin, offers 50% more high-bandwidth memory capacity, and delivers 30% more tokens per dollar than Nvidia's servers. Beyond hardware improvements, AMD also announced a strategic partnership with AI chip company Cerebras to integrate its processors into AMD's data center offerings for faster AI inferencing. The move mirrors Nvidia's collaboration with AI inference specialist Groq, underscoring the growing importance of inference performance as demand for generative AI continues to rise. AMD is seeking to capture a larger share of the AI data center market, where Nvidia is estimated to control between 80% and 90% of the industry. With the launch of Helios, AMD believes it now has its strongest offering yet to compete for enterprise and cloud customers. The company also introduced its EPYC 9006 series server processors during the event. Su said the chips outperform Nvidia's latest server CPUs, noting that the lineup delivers 20% higher per-core performance than Nvidia's Vera CPU. She added that "the 9006 series is the best server CPU lineup in the industry." Looking ahead, AMD said continued growth across its AI systems, personal computing business and broader semiconductor portfolio has significantly expanded its long-term market opportunity. The company now expects its total addressable market to reach $2 trillion by 2030, reflecting rising global demand for AI infrastructure. Nvidia gained an early advantage in the AI boom through years of investment in GPU technology for machine learning and generative AI applications. However, AMD's latest Helios platform signals that competition in the AI hardware space is becoming increasingly intense as major chipmakers race to secure a larger share of the rapidly growing market. Investor confidence in AMD has also strengthened over the past year. The company's shares have climbed 222% in the last 12 months, outperforming Nvidia's 117% gain over the same period. While Nvidia remains the dominant player in AI chips, AMD's recent momentum suggests it is narrowing the gap as demand for advanced AI computing infrastructure continues to accelerate.
