China's Moonshot AI Unveils Kimi K3, World's Largest Open AI Model
Moonshot AI has unveiled Kimi K3, a massive open AI model. The company says it is the largest of its kind. The launch puts fresh pressure on leading AI developers worldwide. China's AI ambitions just took another major step forward. Beijing-based Moonshot AI has released Kimi K3, a new AI model that the company calls the largest open-weight system in the world. The 2.8 trillion-parameter model rivals top systems from Anthropic and OpenAI in early benchmark tests. The launch adds fresh pressure on the global race for AI leadership between China and the US. A Bigger, Smarter Model Kimi K3 launched on July 16 through the Kimi app and the Kimi Code platform. It is well ahead of DeepSeek's V4 Pro, which has 1.6 trillion parameters, and far larger than other Chinese open models released this year. The model comes with a 1-million-token context window. This lets it handle much more text and data in one go than earlier versions could manage. Kimi K3 is built for long-horizon coding, knowledge work, and complex reasoning tasks. In blind tests by AI evaluator Arena, developers rated Kimi ahead of leading US models for front-end coding work. Full model weights, which will allow developers to freely use and adapt the system, will be released publicly on July 27. Rivals Feel the Heat The announcement shook China's AI sector right away. Shares of rival AI firms dropped as investors reacted to the news. Moonshot, backed by Alibaba and Tencent, is also said to be raising close to $2 billion in new funding. That would value the company at roughly $30 billion, ahead of a possible listing in Hong Kong. The release comes just before the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, where China plans to lay out its next steps in AI. As competition between Chinese and American AI labs heats up, Kimi K3 shows the race for advanced AI is moving faster and getting cheaper by the month.
