Dyson unveils new robot vacuum with UV light for 'forensic precision' when cleaning floors

Hot on the heels of introducing its first toothbrush , Dyson has refreshed its entire lineup, including a new range of robot vacuums called Nurovi. That name is a portmanteau of "neural intelliegnce" and "vision", spotlighting the two core systems at work under the bonnet of these industrious 'bots. First up, Dyson R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV . This model uses a combination of UV light and that trademark green illumination that's been found on Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners for some time, analysed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify nearly 200 types of household substances and objects. This lets the robot adapt its cleaning routine until stains are removed. As with previous models in the Spot+Scrub range, Dyson has programmed its 'bot to repeatedly clean dried-in stains over and over (and over) again, until they're gone. That cleaning is handled by a wet roller that's continuously supplied with 70oC water from a 12-point hydration system inside the robot. As it spins to lift stubborn stains, the roller also cleans itself on every rotation. It's also designed to extend 1.6-inches (40mm) beyond the exterior of the case to the very edge of a room, Dyson engineers tell us. The robot stores clean water, grey water and vacuum debris onboard before emptying into its dock, which also cleans and recharges after every clean. Expect the R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV to launch sometime next year. Dyson hasn't yet confirmed the price tag, but given the current Spot+Scrub range starts from £799.99, we'd expect the new model at a similar price point. The top-of-the-line R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV is joined by two more 'bots, the R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry is the first to arrive with triangle-shaped cleaning pads, instead of the circular pads found beneath almost every other robot vacuum cleaner on the market. The pair of Reuleaux triangles — a curved, three-sided shape with a constant width, that looks not dissimilar to the underside of an iron — cleaning pads spin to clean a square of floor. Unlike the typical circular design, the R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry can clean much closer to the edge of the room. The other advantage is that it won't leave a small strip down the middle of the device that needs to be cleaned in another pass, Dyson engineers tell us. Like the pricier R3, it stores clean water, grey water and vacuum debris onboard. This model also features Dyson’s new ‘twin-capture’ system, which works to separate fine and coarse debris. According to the British brand, this maximises efficiency, since the brush bar mechanically sweeps larger debris directly into the machine, leaving the powerful motor to focus on fine dust and smaller particles. Dyson R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry is available to preorder now at £749.99. Rounding out this new Nurovi lineup is the R1 Nurovi R1, which focuses on vacuuming on hard floors and carpets.
