Google Suspends New AI Image Feature in Google Earth Over Policy Concerns

Google has paused a newly launched artificial intelligence image-generation feature in Google Earth, just one day after its release, following the emergence of AI-generated images that appeared to breach the company's content policies. The decision came after users began sharing screenshots of photorealistic images created with the tool, raising fresh concerns about the potential misuse of generative AI for creating misleading or fabricated visual content. Feature Allowed AI-Generated Images of Real-World Locations The feature, powered by Google's Nano Banana 2 AI model, enabled users to generate realistic images of virtually any location in the world using simple text prompts. By combining Google's extensive satellite, aerial and three-dimensional mapping data with generative AI, users could create photorealistic scenes based on actual landmarks, cities and geographical locations. While the technology was designed to support creative and professional applications, critics quickly warned that it could also be exploited to generate convincing fake images involving real places, potentially contributing to misinformation. Google Pauses Rollout to Strengthen Safeguards Announcing the decision on X, Google said it was temporarily withdrawing the capability while it improves protections against misuse. “We've seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we've also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies,” the company said. Google added that it was “pausing the capability while it works on stronger guardrails.” The company did not specify the exact nature of the policy violations or provide examples of the images that prompted the decision. However, it noted that the AI-generated images did not appear within the standard Google Earth experience and were clearly labelled with watermarks indicating they had been created using artificial intelligence. AI Safety Challenges Continue Across Tech Industry Google's latest move reflects the broader challenge facing major technology companies as they race to integrate generative AI into consumer products while attempting to prevent misuse. The rapid expansion of AI-powered tools has brought significant benefits for creativity and productivity, but it has also increased concerns about misinformation, manipulated media and the creation of deceptive content. As a result, several technology firms have been forced to modify, restrict or temporarily suspend AI features shortly after launch when users discovered ways to exploit them. Earlier this month, Meta discontinued its Muse Image feature, which allowed users to generate images using content from public Instagram accounts, following widespread criticism over privacy concerns, including objections from a Hollywood labour union. Google's decision to suspend the Google Earth feature underscores the growing pressure on AI developers to balance innovation with effective safeguards, particularly as increasingly sophisticated image-generation systems become widely available. The company has not indicated when the feature will return but said it is working to strengthen its protections before making the capability available again.
