HKSTP chair sees five-year plan as key opportunity

The chairwoman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), Cordelia Chung, called the SAR’s inaugural five-year plan an excellent opportunity to breathe new life into the city’s existing strengths and enable more precise resource allocation. In an interview with RTHK's "Vision 15: Hong Kong's Chapter", Chung stressed the policy blueprint provides “coordinates” for the city’s future development. “So long as the five-year plan respects Hong Kong’s unique system and free-market rules, I believe it can inject new vitality into our traditional strengths,” she said. “That is to say, areas such as finance, the legal system, intellectual property protection, free port, trade and an international perspective, among others, can be channelled towards innovation and industry. “Our five-year plan provides the coordinates, allowing resource allocation to be more precise. I believe this is an excellent opportunity.” Chung pointed to artificial intelligence, health and life sciences and green technology as the three sectors that could drive Hong Kong’s future development. She added that about 17,000 researchers are currently based at HKSTP, saying it’s crucial to further expand the depth of the city’s talent pool. Edited by Tony Sabine
