IIT Bombay to open first US sub-campus at SUNY Old Westbury in New York

New Delhi: IIT Bombay is set to establish its first international sub-campus in the United States through a partnership with the State University of New York at Old Westbury. The collaboration, formalised during a meeting between the two institutions on Friday, will begin with certificate programmes expected in 2027. The first offerings are planned in artificial intelligence, sustainability and clean technology, with degree programmes to follow in phases. The New York sub-campus is intended to develop engineering education, research and innovation programmes at SUNY Old Westbury, which does not currently offer engineering courses. IIT Bombay faculty members are expected to travel to the campus to teach and help develop the curriculum. IIT Bombay director Shireesh Kedare said the project is not meant to create another admissions route for Indian students through JEE Advanced. The courses will be open to American students and students from around the world. The partnership is also expected to build research links through faculty exchanges, joint projects, conferences and academic symposia. Revenue from the programmes is planned to be reinvested into IIT Bombay’s research infrastructure, including advanced laboratories and new research centres.
