Mandaluyong launches AI glasses program for visually impaired

The Mandaluyong City government has started providing free Rokid Artificial Intelligence (AI) glasses to visually impaired residents as part of its initiative to promote inclusive services through technology. The city government announced on Wednesday, July 15, the launch of what it called the National Capital Region’s first AI glasses program for residents with visual impairments. The initiative was led by Mayor Menchie Abalos, Vice Mayor Anthony Suva, and city councilors through the City Persons with Disability Affairs Division (PDAD). The Rokid AI Glasses are an advanced assistive device capable of real-time translation in more than 80 languages, contextual translation based on the user’s surroundings, and multimodal AI that recognizes objects and provides instant answers from the internet, the local government explained. It added that the device also provides step-by-step navigation instructions and features a point-of-view camera that captures photos and videos from the wearer’s perspective, among other features designed to help persons with visual disabilities carry out daily activities more independently. Wennah Marquez, division chief of PDAD, told the Manila Bulletin that four blind individuals were initially provided with the AI glasses, while other clients are still awaiting evaluation. She added that persons with visual disabilities who are studying or working may avail of the glasses at no cost to support their daily activities. Marquez also said that they are evaluating the potential use of the device for persons who are deaf, noting that it also has translation features. The Mandaluyong City government vowed to continue implementing inclusive programs and services for persons with disabilities through technology and initiatives that address their needs.
