Manulife Deepens AI Push Through Alibaba Cloud Partnership

Hong Kong-based insurer Manulife is expanding its artificial intelligence ambitions in Asia through a new strategic partnership with Alibaba Cloud, as financial institutions across the region race to scale AI capabilities and improve customer engagement. According to a media release issued by Manulife Hong Kong , the insurer has signed a memorandum of understanding with Alibaba Cloud to establish a collaboration framework focused on accelerating AI innovation and developing new applications for the insurance industry. The partnership forms part of Manulife's broader strategy to become an AI-powered organisation and further strengthens the group's technology investments in Hong Kong, one of Asia's leading financial centres. Joint AI Hub Planned As part of the collaboration, Manulife Hong Kong and Alibaba Cloud will explore the creation of a joint AI hub designed to incubate next-generation AI applications and develop new use cases for the insurer's business. The initiative is expected to focus on areas including digital customer journeys, fraud detection and personalised services. Both companies said the collaboration would be guided by strict security, privacy and responsible AI principles, in line with regulatory and data governance requirements. The framework also allows the two parties to evaluate future co-development opportunities and potential go-to-market initiatives, subject to further agreements and regulatory approvals. Strengthening Hong Kong's AI Ambitions The announcement comes as Hong Kong seeks to reinforce its position as a regional centre for technology and AI innovation. «Through the establishment of a joint AI hub, we are creating a structured platform to co-develop innovative AI solutions that can transform both customer experiences and business processes,» said Dr Hongjuan Liu , Chief AI & Data Officer for Manulife Hong Kong and Macau, according to the media release. Andy Bruce , Chief Information Officer for Manulife Hong Kong and Macau, said the initiative builds on an existing technology relationship between the insurer and Alibaba Cloud that has already supported various digital projects across the group's Hong Kong and Macau operations. Billion-Dollar AI Ambition Manulife has already introduced AI across several business functions in Hong Kong, including customer engagement tools, data-driven support for distribution teams and intelligent automation designed to improve operational efficiency. The insurer's AI investments form part of a wider enterprise-wide strategy that extends beyond Asia. Manulife expects artificial intelligence to generate more than USD 1 billion in enterprise value by 2027, underscoring the growing importance of AI within the global insurance industry. For Alibaba Cloud, the partnership represents another step in expanding its presence within financial services, a sector increasingly viewed as one of the most promising areas for commercial AI deployment.
