Massive SpaceX Rocket Part Believed to Hit Moon, NASA to Study Impact
A large piece of space debris from a SpaceX rocket is believed to have crashed into the Moon at high speed, marking a rare and scientifically notable event, though it poses no threat to Earth. The object, weighing around four tonnes and roughly the size of a building, is part of a Falcon 9 rocket stage that launched a lunar lander for Firefly Aerospace in January 2025. The rocket stage, which could not be guided back due to leftover fuel and lack of control systems, remained in space for months before astronomers determined that its orbit was gradually shifting toward the Moon. According to experts, a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces altered its trajectory, ultimately sending it on a collision course. The impact was expected to occur at a speed of approximately 5,400 miles per hour (8,690 km/h), potentially creating a new crater and ejecting a plume of lunar dust. However, the event could not be immediately confirmed by astronomers, likely because the impact site was near the Moon’s edge, making observation difficult. NASA confirmed that the incident poses no danger to Earth. The agency plans to study the impact site to better understand how artificial objects interact with the lunar surface and to improve tracking of space debris. Uncontrolled rocket stage impacts are uncommon but not unprecedented. Similar incidents include a Chinese rocket stage crash in 2022 and deliberate impact experiments conducted by NASA in 2009. Scientists say such events, while accidental, can still provide valuable insights into lunar geology and space debris management. The incident has also renewed discussions between NASA and SpaceX on improving mission designs to prevent future uncontrolled impacts on the Moon.
