Mrunal Thakur Warns Against AI Deepfakes, Threatens Legal Action

Bollywood actor Mrunal Thakur warned against the misuse of artificial intelligence to create deepfake content using her identity. In a statement posted on Instagram on Tuesday, she said anyone creating or sharing such content would face legal action. “Creating or sharing deepfake content using my likeness is illegal and unacceptable,” her statement read. “Consider this your formal notice to stop immediately,” she added. The ‘Sita Ramam’ actress said that creating or sharing deepfake content with her identity is a serious violation and warned that any further misuse could lead to legal action. Her statement adds to the growing backlash against AI-generated deepfakes, which are increasingly being used to create manipulated videos, fake images and cloned voices of public figures. Celebrities Against Deepfakes Mrunal Thakur joins a growing list of actors pushing back against AI misuse. Several celebrities have already initiated legal action over the unauthorised use of their image, voice and identity in AI-generated content. Actors like Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta , Kartik Aaryan and Suniel Shetty have all moved court over the misuse of their identities. The issue gained wider attention after a manipulated video of Rashmika Mandanna went viral, with the actor calling it ‘extremely scary’ and urging people to take the threat of deepfakes seriously. Busy Schedule Ahead On the work front, Mrunal is working on multiple projects. After ‘Dacoit’ and ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ met with varied responses from the audience, she is now busy working on ‘Raaka’, directed by Atlee Kumar. Featuring Allu Arjun, Deepika Padukone and Rashmika Mandanna, Raaka is reportedly set across two timelines. One explores tribal life in the Puranic or Vedic era, while the other follows a divine warrior's mission in the present day. ‘ Raaka ’ is allegedly budgeted at Rs. 1,000 crore, with its release tentatively scheduled for December 2027. However, the producers have not yet made an official announcement regarding the release date. The actor's statement echoes a concern shared by many in the film industry. With AI tools becoming more powerful and easily accessible, artists are increasingly worried about their image and identity being misused without their consent.
