Nigerian Cybersecurity Startup Aeon Raises $1m to Protect Critical Infrastructure

Olufemi Adeyemi Nigerian cybersecurity startup Aeon has raised $1 million in a pre-seed funding round as it moves to expand its cyber defence platform and convert pilot projects with financial services and cloud infrastructure companies into commercial deployments. The round was led by defence-tech company Terra Industries, with participation from Resilience 17, the venture fund founded by Flutterwave co-founder and chief executive officer Olugbenga Agboola; Kaleo; DFS Labs; Ajim Capital; and Seedstars. Aeon plans to deploy the fresh capital across product development, business development and the expansion of its commercial operations as it targets organisations whose operations depend heavily on secure digital infrastructure. The startup is positioning its technology for what it describes as “high-trust organisations”, including commercial banks and financial institutions, energy and oil and gas companies, mobility operators and other organisations responsible for critical infrastructure. Tackling fragmented cybersecurity systems Aeon’s funding comes against a backdrop of increasing cyber threats facing African businesses and public institutions. INTERPOL estimated that cyber incidents across Africa resulted in more than $3 billion in financial losses between 2019 and 2025. In its 2026 assessment, the international policing organisation also reported that artificial intelligence was linked to 55% of reported cybercrimes on the continent. For Aeon, one of the challenges facing organisations is not necessarily a lack of cybersecurity tools, but the fragmented nature of the systems they use. “Almost every operator we worked with had a dozen security tools and no single view of their exposure,” Samuel Ogbonyomi, co-founder and chief executive officer of Aeon, said in a statement. “Attackers move across all of those systems at once. We built Aeon so a bank or a grid operator can see and fix its whole attack surface from one place.” The company is developing two main product suites. Aeon Console is a web-based platform designed to bring several security functions into a single interface. These include risk detection, vulnerability management, policy enforcement, incident response and evidence gathering. Aeon Edge, meanwhile, operates within a customer's network. It gives security teams visibility into connected devices and enables them to isolate devices that have been compromised. The company primarily operates on an annual licensing model. Its Console is modular and available across three tiers, allowing customers to choose specific security capabilities instead of subscribing to the entire platform. From PipeOps to Aeon Aeon was founded by Ogbonyomi, Ben Eluan and Alex Idowu, who began developing the product in February 2026 through PipeOps, a cloud infrastructure management platform. Ogbonyomi has described PipeOps as the parent entity, with Aeon operating as a product developed under the company. The startup is now being built as a dedicated cybersecurity business focused on organisations where disruptions or breaches could have significant financial or operational consequences. “We’re selling to high-trust organisations; it’s very important that we’re able to partner with highly networked individuals that ultimately have access to decision-makers across various industries,” Ogbonyomi told TechCabal. The company's strategy is therefore not limited to selling software directly to individual security teams. It is also seeking partnerships that can give it access to larger corporate and government customers. Terra partnership opens commercial opportunity Beyond the funding, the investment creates a commercial relationship between Aeon and Terra Industries, which closed a $52 million seed round in August. The two companies are planning a commercial joint venture that would allow them to pursue some of Terra's corporate and government contracts together. Under the proposed arrangement, Terra would provide physical security services while Aeon would be responsible for cybersecurity and the protection of customers' digital assets. “We see Aeon becoming the sovereign cyber defense layer for the Global South, where financial institutions, large corporations, governments and militaries run their cyber operations on Aeon’s infrastructure,” said Nathan Nwachuku, chief executive officer of Terra Industries. “That is our goal, where Terra handles physical security, and Aeon handles digital and cyber security.” The structure would allow customers to sign contracts with Terra, after which cybersecurity requirements could be extended to Aeon where appropriate. Ogbonyomi said the arrangement could create opportunities for Aeon to participate in contracts that Terra wins across different industries. Terra has recently announced several security contracts in Nigeria. On September 4, the defence-tech company announced $2 million in contracts to deploy 20 Sentry towers and four Iroko drones across lithium mining sites operated by two companies in Nigeria. Ten days later, Terra announced a separate $1 million contract with Anka Metals to provide security for its Jema’a Resource Project in Kaduna State. Aeon has not said whether it will participate in either project. Ogbonyomi, however, said the startup is assessing some of Terra's contracts for potential cybersecurity opportunities. “We’re already looking at a couple of contracts between now and the end of the fourth quarter, and are hoping to close them in due time,” he said. A relationship that predates the funding The partnership between the two companies developed from an existing working relationship rather than beginning with the latest investment. Before PipeOps began developing Aeon as a dedicated cybersecurity product, its team had spent about two years managing portions of Terra's internal infrastructure. That experience gave the companies an opportunity to assess how their respective capabilities could complement each other. Aeon said the two companies began a pilot earlier in 2026, eventually leading to the broader commercial arrangement. The partnership places Aeon in a market that already includes major international cybersecurity companies such as Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet and Check Point, alongside African cybersecurity firms including Kenya-based Serianu and Morocco's Nucleon Security. Rather than competing solely on individual security products, Aeon says it wants to build an integrated infrastructure layer that can bring multiple aspects of cybersecurity operations together. Targeting the Global South The company's longer-term ambition extends beyond Nigeria and Africa. Aeon wants to establish what it describes as a cybersecurity infrastructure layer for critical organisations across the Global South, with financial institutions, corporations, governments and other high-value operators among its potential customers. For now, the company is focused on turning its existing pilots into paying customers while expanding its product capabilities and commercial reach. “We’ve been building in stealth for quite some time, but sequel to this announcement, you’re going to be seeing more of this,” Ogbonyomi said. “We’re going to be driving a lot of thought leadership and educating the region on some of the most critical issues we should be paying attention to.”
