Paul Chan calls on youth to embrace AI
Financial Secretary Paul Chan has called on students who sat their university entrance examinations to combine their interests with artificial intelligence. His call came as the results of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exams are set to be released on Wednesday. Writing in his weekly blog, Chan said students now have more diversified academic and career development paths, and AI would bring new job opportunities. Chan said the market requires workers who not only have expertise in specific fields, but also know how to amplify their capabilities using AI tools. “Finding your passion and staying curious, together with AI knowledge – that would become a breakthrough for enhancing capabilities,” he said. The finance chief went on to say that the government has been promoting the application of AI to create more opportunities, after LEAP East – the flagship innovation and technology event in the Middle East – was hosted by Hong Kong. “For young people, world-class technology events and related activities held in Hong Kong open a window for them to learn about the latest development of cutting-edge technologies around the world, especially on how AI is applied in areas such as healthcare, finance, energy and industrial production,” he said. Chan added that youngsters’ exploration of interests has never been limited to Hong Kong, and they could build their careers on the mainland and around the globe. Edited by Edmond Fong
