Singapore Establishes Framework to Block Synthetic Mirror Life Creation
Singapore is developing an institutional framework for regulating synthetic biology that aims to prevent the creation of self-replicating "mirror life” organisms while maintaining access to useful molecular tools. The core of this shift involves moving from general support for the bioeconomy to specific mechanisms for verifying orders of synthetic nucleic acids and requiring state funding bodies to refuse financing for projects aimed at creating replicating mirror bacteria. This regulatory approach applies to researchers and commercial entities working with DNA and RNA, establishing a new threshold for material accessibility. Access to genetic sequences is now subject to biosafety procedures rather than being governed solely by commercial or scientific utility. The basis for this regulation lies in risk assessments published by a group of scientists in the journal Science in December 2024. Their analysis indicated that a mirror bacterium, possessing left-handed chirality as opposed to the right-handed chirality of natural life, would not be recognized by the enzymes, viruses, and immune systems of existing organisms. This creates two specific risks: the bacterial organism could survive in the environment by avoiding natural predators and pathogens, and it could cause severe infections in humans and animals against which standard antibiotics would be ineffective due to chiral incompatibility.
