Volkswagen Deepens Horizon Robotics Partnership to Accelerate AI-Powered Autonomous Driving

Volkswagen is strengthening its autonomous driving ambitions in China by expanding the collaboration between its China-based automated driving unit, CARIZON, and Chinese artificial intelligence company Horizon Robotics. The renewed partnership is expected to accelerate the development of advanced self-driving technologies while reinforcing the German automaker's position in the world's largest automotive market. Under the enhanced agreement, CARIZON will gain access to Horizon Robotics' AI foundation model, a move Volkswagen says will significantly speed up the development of its proprietary AI-powered driving systems. The collaboration will support the rollout of increasingly sophisticated autonomous driving features, including technologies designed for future robotaxi services. Volkswagen announced on Wednesday that it aims to begin delivering vehicles equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities in the second half of next year. At this level of automation, drivers can temporarily take their eyes off the road under specific traffic and road conditions, although they must remain ready to resume control when required. Beyond Level 3, the partnership will also focus on advancing Level 4 autonomous driving technology. Vehicles operating at this level can perform all driving tasks within designated operational areas with minimal or no human intervention, making them suitable for applications such as robotaxis and autonomous mobility services. The latest agreement reflects Volkswagen's broader strategy of deepening local partnerships in China to accelerate innovation, respond to growing competition from domestic electric vehicle manufacturers, and develop technologies tailored to the Chinese market before expanding them globally. Commenting on the expanded collaboration, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume said the move would "reinforce our competitiveness in China, and open up new opportunities in selected international markets". As competition in autonomous driving intensifies, Volkswagen's strengthened alliance with Horizon Robotics highlights the increasing importance of artificial intelligence and local technology partnerships in shaping the next generation of intelligent and self-driving vehicles.
